The Long Haul to Net Zero: Strategic Pathways to HGV Decarbonisation in Retail
13 Nov 2025
Seminar Theatre 4 UK
The road to decarbonising heavy goods vehicle (HGV) transport in retail is paved with both opportunity and complexity. While technology for electric and alternative-fuel trucks is maturing, true transformation requires an energy-system lens, collaborative thinking, and strategic change across the supply chain.
This session will:
- Examine how leading retailers, suppliers, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers are redesigning delivery models – leveraging practices such as backhauling, front-hauling, and shared freight networks – to reduce inefficiencies and emissions.
- Explore the macro challenges in HGV electrification, from depot-level charging requirements to grid capacity, energy pricing, and the interplay with renewable energy strategies.
- Draw on personal experience leading strategic supply chain transformation at Waitrose, including working end-to-end with 3PLs to optimise cost, improve service, and embed sustainability.
Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how operational collaboration, strategic partnerships, and energy-system planning can accelerate HGV decarbonisation – delivering both environmental impact and commercial resilience.
